How To Shirk Your Legal Responsibilities

1. Leave the state.

That's it. Apparently that is all you have to do. Go one hour south, cross into Connecticut and you're good. Unfair.

I try to remember that it can't rain all the time.

Spreading the Love

How much fun are blog awards?? So much fun! Thanks Ebony for presenting me with the Kreativ Blogger award!

Here are the rules:

1. Thank the person who nominated you for this award.

2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.

3. Link to the person who nominated you for this award.

4. Name 7 things about yourself that people might not know.

5. Nominate 7 Kreativ Bloggers.

6. Post links to the 7 blogs you nominate.

7. Leave a comment on each of the blogs letting them know they have been nominated.

My fave part - seven things about me!
  1. I don't actually like talking about myself. I don't take compliments, at all. Hard to believe, I know.

  2. I cannot pick up feathers off of the ground. My bro is the same way. When we were growing up, our parents told us not to because they were dirty. Then we moved to Maine. Its not quite as dirty there as in Boston, but we still had it in our heads. His wife still thinks we are totally weird.

  3. I do NOT buy Dominos or Coors. They are homophobic pro-life supporters. I use my consumer power to assert my beliefs. (Maybe you already knew that?)

  4. My ipod only has 2 GB. It is really sad. When I first got it, it was okay, because it took 20 minutes to download one song. Now it takes me 3 minutes to download a whole album. I need an upgrade.

  5. I read Wikipedia like it is the Bible. (Is that blasphemous?) Seriously. I find out about a topic that I am not informed about and I read all about it on Wikipedia. I read the book Reading Lolita in Tehran and I read the whole Wikipedia article on Iran. The. Whole. Article. It was really interesting.

  6. I voted for Nader in 2000. I really wanted his party to get his 6%. I voted in a blue state (Maine) so I was not concerned that my vote may negatively affect Gore's polls. I do not accept any blame for Bush being elected. So don't even try ;)

  7. Finally, something that may actually interest some of you. I do not like commenting on a blog that already has a lot of comments. I really don't want to read everyone else's comments and I don't want to repeat someone else, so I just say nothing. Double digits really intimidate me. Don't be offended. I am just not original enough for a new comment.

Now my least fave part (of the two); nominating kreativ blogs. Not because there are not tons of blogs that I love. In fact most of the blogs I love already have the awards that I wish to bestow on them... soo....

Fancy Schmancy

Naomi @ Surviving Single Motherhood

Judi @ Lines Composed...

Legal Mist

Life With Kaishon

Frannie @ Frannie Fires Back

Angela @ Angela's Adventures

Whew! This post is taking me way too long! Wait, what is that? Another award?!? You love me! You really do!!

Thank you Angela!! She thinks I am a Queen!! I know you are jealous.

And because I am a Queen, I get to make some rules. I can bestow this award on the same people that got the Kreativ Blogger. And there is nothing you can do about it. So there.

Fancy Schmancy

Ebony @ Sizzling Publications

Naomi @ Surviving Single Motherhood

Judi @ Lines Composed...

Legal Mist

Life With Kaishon

Frannie @ Frannie Fires Back

Thanks so much for the awards! When I started this blog, I really didn't think anyone would actually read it. I always felt like I was a lousy storyteller, but now I think it maybe in the editing. Anyways, thank you everyone for reading and thank you everyone who I read for brightening my days. <3>

Sonic Rocks

For years decades Sonic has been flooding our air waves with commercials. And every commercial makes you think "Damn. I really want to go to that restaurant. Where is there one around me?" Then you would go look it up and lo and behold the closest was in New Jersey. WHAT?!? Why would they tempt us so with delicious burgers and tots and slushes just so we can hunger for that which we cannot have? Unfair.

Until this week.

This last Wednesday, the unthinkable happened. Sonic opened a store near my house! WAHOO! This is seriously a big deal. Bigger than when the Five Guys opened in Swampscott. Its is all they talked about on the radio. Sonic - Rte 1 in Saugus!

I had a few hours to myself on Thursday afternoon (!!) so I went over to have a delicious burger. I drove up and down Rte 1 in Saugus. Where is it? I was on the phone with 411 trying to get the address as I was driving into Peabody and hit traffic. Bad traffic. Just as the 411 fella tells me that it is actually in Peabody, I see the cause of the traffic - SONIC!!

Now quick side note: People - Rte 1 is not ALL in Saugus. Nope. Some is in Revere, some is in Peabody, some is actually in Danvers too. It is true. Look it up.

It was Fucking Sonic!! There was one of those huge construction signs that changes telling us Sonic's hours. There was police directing traffic. They had blocked the main entrance into Sonic, because there was even more traffic back up the day before. We had to drive to the road around back to get to the restaurant. So I see this ahead of me:

And this is behind me:

I wait in that line of traffic for about 20 minutes until I get to the actual entrance where I see this:

As I sat in this impossibly long line, I wondered to myself if it was worth it. But I noticed that none of the other cars were leaving. They were committed. Then I began seeing the cars driving away with slushes in their hands. These people were so happy! They looked as if they had just finished a pilgrimage where they had seen the face of God. I would not turn back! I could not turn back!

When I could see Sonic, there were a ton of guys directing cars. Did you want a stall? Wait in this impossibly long line. Did you want drive-thru? Pass by this impossibly long line and go around the building. Drive-thru it was! These are the stalls:

Wicked cool, yes, but not worth the extra hour I would have had to wait. (I would have taken better pictures but I kinda felt like a weirdo.) By this time I have been in line for 45 minutes. Yup, uh huh, 45 minutes.

And it was another 15 or so before I got to the menu board to order. Of course, when I got to the menu board, I had no idea what to order because I didn't know what they had!

Okay, I have been to Sonic before, when I lived in Denver. I remembered that it was delicious, but I could not remember the menu items. Don't judge.

I felt like I had to just pick something quick. Although, in retrospect, nothing happening that day was happening quick, so surely I could have taken my time, but I digress. I order a number 1 with cheese, tots, and a cherry slush. I then wait for my deliciousness.

And then it came! On wheels, nonetheless!

And the birds began singing. And the sun was shining. And the air was crisp and clean. And I had my cherry slush.

And my number 1 with cheese and tots.

After one hour, my journey had ended. I had my food. It was so good and so worth the wait. I wish I had ordered the large. Damn. I drove away munching on my food thinking that all was right in this world.

I am going to wait a while before going back though. I don't know if I could do an hour again.

Pooch Plight

My animals are driving me nuts.

Okay, she isn't really. She has been really good lately. It is the effing dog park that is driving me nuts.

The last time I was there was about a year ago. This big ass boxer ran into me. Directly. Into. Me. I fell to the ground and honestly thought that someone was going to have to call an ambulance. Eventually I got up and limped home. Months went by and it still hurt. Long story short (if you are interested in the longer version click here) I wear a brace and shoe inserts now. It still hurts.

Fast forward to last Sunday. I was in a shitty mood. I knew that this week was gonna suck (more on that later, maybe) and I was really stressed out about it. I thought we could go to the dog park and Ryder and Penny would play and leave me alone for a bit.

So we show up to the park and all of the dog park elitists are sitting on their chairs in the shade. We enter gate number 1 to encounter a big ol' sign. "Must have pooch pass to enter" You have gotta be fucking kidding me. Pooch pass? I have a dog licence, isn't that enough? I literally sat down on the bench and cried. Fuck them and their pooch pass. The sign says that you can purchase one at the Salem rec center which is open Monday through Friday 8-4. Yup, when I am in Boston working.

I go online to see about this pooch pass. It costs $25. Seriously? And you need all of the dog's shots, including distemper. My dog hasn't had her distemper in years. I am not going to the vet and pay the $50 office visit and the $25 vaccination just to get a damn pooch pass. Forget it.

*sigh*

Half Baked

It's Tuesday so that means it is another awkward moment from Raine's archives (because obviously I am not awkward now.) Head over to Tova Darling's for even more fun!

When I was younger I smoked a lot. A lot of pot, a lot of cigarettes, and a lot of other things. One evening a couple of girlfriends and myself smoked a lot of pot then went over to the pool hall. The pool hall was the place to be. Anyone who was anyone went to the pool hall. Partly because you could smoke there and partly because there was no other place to go.

After the pool hall, because there was no other place to go, we went back to my parent's house. We popped Half Baked into the VCR, because we were stoners and effing LOVED that movie.

So picture us. Three girls, stoned out of their minds, sitting on the same couch watching Half Baked. Just sitting and staring. Not talking. Not laughing. Just watching.

My mom comes in. She sits down on the other couch and starts watching it with us. Soon she starts sniffing. And looking at us, and sniffing.

Mom: Do one of you girls smoke?

Me: No, mom, we were at the poool hallll.

Mom: Aren't you worried about secondhand smoke?

Me: No.

My friends never even registered this exchange. I just wanted my mom to leave sooo badly.

Wind Blows

I was reading this article in The Phoenix the other day and it got me to thinking about wind power. I have thought about it in the past, in fact I pay extra on my electric bill in order for my electricity to come from renewable resources, such as wind. And you can't live in Mass without hearing about the Cape Wind controversy.

What I didn't realize before is how many people are against wind turbines. They have tons of reasons, but they don't all make sense to me. Maybe they will make sense to you. Lets go through them together.

Noise. Granted, I have never actually been up to a turbine, but they don't seem so loud to me. Lets have a listen:

I don't know about you, but it didn't sound that loud. Some people think they are so loud, that there is an actual sickness - wind turbine syndrome. According to this website (which is a little cheesy) its not actually the audible sound that is hazardous, but the low frequency noise. Now, that makes sense. It is similar to working around machinery that is not necessarily loud, but is constantly assaulting your ear drums with low frequency noise. I would like to see something a little more scientifically proven (not that I don't love their drawings.)

A big argument around here is that turbines are an eyesore. They will ruin our beautiful scenery. Personally, I think it depends on your perspective. I think they are beautiful. They remind me that society is becoming more environmentally conscience. It makes me think that the future maybe a little bit better for my son when he is my age. Some disagree. What do you think? Would you rather see this:

Or this:

Or maybe this:

This brings us to the argument that wind is unreliable. There will always need to be a power plant as a back up. The turbine does not turn if there isn't enough wind. If there is too much wind, it overloads the grid and also stops spinning. So why bother with the wind if we will still need power plants? To this I refer you to this article in Cape Cod Today. Basically, yes, we still need a back up to wind power. We are not going to be able to put up some turbines and then shut down all of the nuclear plants. That would be awesome, but unrealistic. But isn't some renewable energy better than none?

This reminds me of the health care reform. No, it is not perfect, but we need to start somewhere.

One more major argument is that it will negatively affect wildlife and the ecosystems around the turbines. Might I point out the negative effects of nuclear or coal power plants? Or is that too obvious? The companies do extensive research to minimize any disruptions. There has been new technology to slow down the speed that the turbines spin so they are safer for birds.

With proper planning, all of these concerns can be dealt with. That is why we have hunting and fishing regulations. This is also how we are able to use state forests for logging and recreation. Good old fashioned planning.

People who are not environmental conscience seem to think that those of us that are are trying to fix Earth. This is just not so. We will never be able to restore the damage already done to the Earth. Nor will we be able to stop impacting the Earth. We can, however, try to minimize the impact. Perhaps we can slow down the destruction.

Who Is Teaching Who?

What I have learned from my toddler:

How to remove computer keys, clean them, replace them, and get them to function properly.

How nice a sleeping child is.

How you do not need two parents to be happy.

How soft antlers are.

How to milk a cow.

How to open and close and open and close and open and close doors.

Me? Wordless?

I don't usually do Wordless Wednesdays because I have just too much to say. Let a picture talk for me? Hells no!

This week, I have decided that I have talked about this subject plenty, so I leave you with a picture of my car:

I Don't Have A Business, Per Se

Remember my swinger neighbor? Well, when I first moved in she had me fooled. She talked about her "businesses" and "classes" and such. I thought she was a business woman.

Come to find out, she was just a good exaggerator. An unemployed exaggerator.

But before the revelation, she asked me if I wanted to go to this Main Streets reception. Main Streets is like our Chamber of Commerce. It is the local business association. I told her that it didn't sound like an event for babies, but she insisted that it would be fine. There would be food and wine so we should go with her.

I show up with my infant wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Everyone else is dressed up. She drags me around introducing me to people and of course they are asking me what my business is.

Err... The largest private employer in the Commonwealth. No, it is not in Salem.

I felt like a complete fool. People were being nice to us, but I could see it in their eyes: "Why are they here?"

Then I learned the truth! Swinger-Neighbor is talking to this man. They are talking about how they map out these kind of events for the free food! Seriously. They know when all the hardware stores summer barbecues are. All the grand openings. All the Christmas parties. They literally travel all over for the free food. Seems like way too much work to me.

So, I felt awkward and she got some free egg rolls. Perfect.

For more awkwardness head on over to Tova Darling's blog.

Adventures In Potty Training Part III

Have you read 1 & 2?

I bought some Pull-Ups. He doesn't seem interested in them at all, but they are here just in case.

He has been asking me more often to change his diaper. I get so excited when he does! Although, more than not he doesn't want his diaper changed. Slowly but surely.

I have found that bribery rewards seem to help. He gets a sticker every time he uses the potty. (Sometimes, I reuse stickers. He doesn't know the difference!!) I think the stickers are particularly helpful before baths. I think he is starting to realize that he doesn't get a sticker for peeing in the bath. I am teaching him to maximize his profits.

I talked to daycare about starting him out using the potty there. I think they have had minimal success. My mom told me that she knows a woman who took a whole week of vacation from work to potty train. She said it worked. I said that there was no way I was going to take a week off to potty train.

On a side note, I saw a couple walking down the street today. The woman was pushing a carriage and the man was carrying a potty! Ugg! I so don't want to do that! (Note to self: find new husband - fast!)

We are going at our own pace. We are still reading Once Upon A Potty and we are still enjoying it. I may never know what is so exciting about that book.

That is all from the potty front.

Shameless Self Promotion

Yes, I looked for the worst picture of myself that I could find. I just walked 13 miles... you wouldn't look hot either! There is a good pic somewhere though....
This was taken at last year's Boston Marathon's Jimmy Fund Walk. We walked 13.1 miles and raised money for the Jimmy Fund which raises money for cancer research.
I am walking again this year! It is September 13th (oh god!)
Why I walk: My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in October 2007. She immediately had surgery but the large tumor is right on her hepatic artery, so they could not get all of it. She then tried chemo. Again, it shrunk the tumor but it was still there. They put her on a "maintenance" dose of chemo and that just prevented it from getting worse. Now she is participating in a drug trial at Mass General Hospital. We are cautiously optimistic.
The Jimmy Fund supports research, such as the one my mom participates in. I am proud to be a part of it.

That's Good. That's Bad.

Reasons today sucked:
  1. I was given a sheet of things to do at work then they got mad at me because the sheet was wrong.
  2. It was cold this morning.
  3. The cassette for my western didn't have tape so it leaked (I know you probably don't understand this one, but just know it sucked.)
  4. I went to lunch late, by myself.
  5. People don't clean up after themselves.
  6. The walk sign wouldn't light up when we were trying to cross the street. We had to wait through several rotations.
  7. It started raining while we were at the farmer's market.
  8. Traffic was terrible.
  9. I got a court summons which I now have to figure out how to serve my ex.
  10. The Department of Revenue is always closed when I remember to call them.
  11. I have to call my mom and tell her that I don't want to go up there this weekend.

Reasons today was good:

  1. I was able to get cash back at CVS instead of paying the ATM fee.
  2. I shared a Twix with Ryder.
  3. We went to the farmer's market and bought some delicious food.
  4. It started raining at the market but it was a sun shower and felt kinda nice.
  5. I had leftover Chinese for lunch.
  6. I finished a bunch of stuff at work that was piling on my desk.
  7. Ryder is playing nicely with his blocks.
  8. I will finally get to get this court crap over with.
  9. I had a nice walk this morning.
  10. I had a nice nap on the train.
  11. I wasn't worried that the dog was going to die of heat exhaustion while we were out.

I suppose looking over my lists, today wasn't as bad as I originally thought. Maybe I should do this every day. Plus, most of the bad stuff was at work and the good stuff at home. That's how it is supposed to be, right?

Come Here, I Have Something To Tell You....

This week I have chosen Mama Kat's prompt number 4: List ten things you would say to ten different people in your life...if you had the hutzpah. If you don't know what these prompt thingys are, just travel right over to Mama Kat's and she will explain everything

Anyways, I have done this list before on myspace or facebook or youtube or something or other. It was so liberating that I am happy to unload again.
  1. The words 'I love you' cannot begin to describe my vast adulation for you.

  2. I am really glad you moved here, but I am afraid that you will stop hanging out with me like the others did.

  3. Too bad you don't live closer, we would have some fun, fun, fun, fun!

  4. I love you, but I just need some time away from you right now.
  5. I hope you do not end up like I did.

  6. I have so much fun with you! You are a bad influence!

  7. Fuck you, you douche.

  8. You don't know how much your phone calls mean to me.

  9. I miss you. Our friendship was so important to me. I don't think you knew that.

  10. You only call me when things are going bad with your relationships.

  11. Don't listen to your hubby, I completely understand.

  12. I wish you didn't believe everything you hear. I know you are not stupid, but these things make you look that way.

Okay, so that is 12. You got two freebies! And don't bother asking, I'm not telling you who is who. If you think you can guess, you are probably right, my life is pretty much an open book.

The Family That Is Awkward Together...

For this week's TAT with Tova Darling, I am going to give you a kind of montage of awkwardness. I have seen my father's family twice in the last month and it has given me adequate TAT fodder.

Background: My cousin, N, found some girl online that lives in a far away state (a state, state, not like a state of mind.) He married her and never came back. So, thanks to Facebook, I have been talking to him again. I saw N's mom, Auntie A, recently and told her that I have been talking to N. "Really???" she exclaimed, "How is he?!?!?" She was genuinely excited to hear news about him. "Uhhh... good, I guess," I replied. I didn't expect such a response. Wish he had mentioned that he hadn't spoken to his mom is a long time.

Auntie R shows up at the party. Cousin K asks "Is Uncle D here? He must be if his wife R is." Then we are told that he is not there. He is actually camping with his ex-wife and their children. Ooookkkkaaaayyyy....

There was a bunch of whispering all of a sudden. "Is that Joan??" "Omigod, I think that is Joan!" "Oh, it definitely is, I can recognize her voice anywhere!" "I can't believe she is here." Then my mom says, "Auntie C, isn't she your ex-mother-in-law?" "Yes," Auntie C confirms. I have no idea why she was there. I felt awkward for everyone.

This one isn't really awkward, but a good story nonetheless. Auntie A was showing me pictures on her camera and I suggested that she put them on photobucket so everyone could have access to them. My Nanna chimes in with "They are taking babies' photos off of the Internet and putting them up on Craigslist for adoption! Then people are seeing these babies at the mall, calling their names and stealing them. I would never put my grandson's picture online." Okay, Nanna, that makes zero sense. Why would someone try to adopt a child on Craigslist and what would be the incentive for the person posting? Selling babies at least I could comprehend. Then, what are the odds that you will see a child online and then happen to see them at the mall, recognize them, then steal them. I agree that you have to be careful about what you post, but puh-lease Nanna.

Gotta love the fam.

No Thank You

Good in TentImage by makelessnoise via Flickr

Dear Friends and Family,

I appreciate the offers extended to Ryder and myself, but no, we do not want to camp in your backyard.

I know that you have been hearing me complain that people keep ditching me so I can't go camping. As you know, I do not feel that it is safe for the two of us to go on our own. I know you are just trying to be helpful, but no, we really do not want to camp in your backyard.

I agree. It would be terribly convenient to be so close to a flushing toilet, shower and stove. Might I point out how close to actual beds we would be sleeping? If I am going to sleep on your property, it will be on a bed with sheets surrounded by walls that keep the bugs out. Oh, and electric lights.

Again, I appreciate the sentiment, but I feel that it just would not be the same.

Love,
Raine

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

So, I ask myself "What makes a person powerful?"

"Money," I tell myself.

Money makes the world go round, and all that jazz.

All worldly decisions ultimately come down to money. Oil, embargoes, mergers, firing and hiring, health care, class systems, fame. The people with the money make the decisions.

I am preaching to the choir, I know. "Why," you ask, "are you even thinking about this never mind writing about it?"

I wish I could do more. Influence more decisions. Important decisions. Environmental, health care, military spending, welfare. But you need power to be influential.

I feel like I do do a lot. I recycle, vote, try to educate. But it is not enough for me. Money = Power. So, I will use my money wisely to influence decisions. I don't have to be rich to play their games.
I will not spend my money at establishments that lobby against my beliefs. I will not spend my money at establishments that treat their workers unfairly. I will buy products produced, shipped, and sold in more environmentally friendly ways. I will use my consumer power to its fullest extent.

I have long ago stopped buying Coors and Domino's because of their pro-life, anti-gay stances. I have not shopped at Walmart in God knows how long. I shop locally instead of at chain stores. I buy recycled and recyclable products. I try to stay up to date with green companies so that I can support them when I can.

In a capitalistic society, I think we need to be responsible consumers.

It is all about the Benjamins.

Do you know of other companies to stay away from or support? I'd like to hear about your responsible spending and maybe I can incorporate it into mine.

*Bonus game: How many cliches did I use in this post?*

Yay For Sisters!

Apparently, (I never got the memo) it was, or will be, Sister's Day. Angela says it was last Sunday. Hallmark says it will be next Sunday. I say lets split the difference and celebrate all week! What do you say? Are you with me?

I have three sisters, two bio and one in-law.

This is Liz (on the left) and Ginny (on the right):

This is Diane (at her and my bro's wedding):

Aren't they pretty?? Let me tell you about them:

Liz is 21 and lives in the Arctic. Okay, not really the Arctic but it is so far in northern Maine that it may as well be. I think I am most like her. We talk almost daily. She is always way too stressed out about work and her upcoming wedding (sorry boys, she is taken!) Chill! Smoke some more pot!

Liz is a little naive and very gullible. This provides for hours of laughter - with her not at her! She loves Family Guy, dogs, chocolate, The Beatles, brown and pink. She dislikes Spongebob.

Ginny is 18 and currently lives with our parents. It is not her chosen abode, but she is trying to get on her feet. She is learning how difficult it is to live out on your own. I think I look most like her. She got married in a very nontraditional manner. I don't actually know the details, you'd have to ask her (sorry boys, she is taken!)

Ginny is incredibly smart. When you put her and Liz together it is plain hilarity. Ginny is a doer. When she puts her mind to something she wants to do, she does it to completion. She really wants to travel. She loves zombies, acting, music, books, and anime. She hates butterflies.

Last, but certainly not least, is Diane. She has been with my brother since 8th grade! Holy cow! And they just got married last October. It took them a while and I was sure to point it out in my speech. Okay, and another bit of my speech that I would like to share with you. I remember when I first met Diane. She had come to our door looking for my brother. I don't remember exactly what I said, but I know it was something rude and I slammed the door on her. Oops! Now my door is always open to her.

Diane is very creative. She is a photographer and she makes jewelry. She is closest in age to me, so we can share things that are more sophisticated. She loves wine, fondue, roses, and vampires (cool ones not stupid Twilight ones.) She hates people who copyright material and republicans.
I love my sisters dearly. I am very fortunate to have such a close loving family. We rarely, if ever, fight and then we forgive easily.
I love you girls!! <3

You Might As Well Leave

Leaving the Salem Train StationImage by Marc Amos via Flickr

I take the train to work and every day when I get off of the train, I see people waiting for their rides. I have to fight the urge to go running over to them yelling "You might as well leave! He won't be coming to pick you up!"

Wouldn't I be the crazy lady at the station?

I have always lived within walking distance of the train. We (the ex and I) only had one car for a while and I like walking, so I walked. Now, when I had the car and had to pick him up, he would tell me that he was getting out at, say, 9:00 pm. But really he was getting out at 9:30 pm. He just didn't want me to be late. He didn't want to be waiting on me.

I am never late for anything.

On occasion, he would call me and tell me that he would pick me up at the station. (Specially when I was prego.) So, I would get off of the train and wait. And wait. And wait. I would call him and ask him how long he would be. He would tell me a couple of minutes. I would say "If it is any more than a couple of minutes, just tell me. I can walk home quicker." "Couple of minutes" he would say.

Guess you can probably tell where this is going.

It wouldn't be a couple of minutes. Then I would be the idiot waiting for a ride when I live right down the street. I am not exaggerating when I say it would have been quicker for me to walk. I would get so upset.

I am constantly discovering more pieces of our relationship that were just a bit fucked up.
